About The Old Packhouse

Judy and Warrick Hyland

Judy and Warrick Hyland transformed a former timber mill into a thriving hub for markets and local enterprise.

Originally from Auckland, Judy and Warrick Hyland relocated to Kerikeri in 2005 after their six children had grown up and left home. While running a small cabinetry and giftware business in Auckland, Warrick had long wanted to return to Northland to help his father on the family farms. With a new chapter ahead, the couple were ready for a change.

In 2012, Warrick’s father purchased the property at 505 Kerikeri Road, then home to Dundee Lumber / Interiors Dundee — a timber milling and furniture manufacturing business. The following year, Judy and Warrick opened their cabinetry business, Hylands Ancient Kauri, within the building.

At the same time, they shared a vision for something more. They loved Kerikeri but felt the town needed a welcoming place to gather — a vibrant, all-weather undercover market supporting local growers, makers and small businesses. With Northland rich in talented entrepreneurs and producers, the idea of creating a space to showcase local work, fresh produce, great food and live entertainment quickly took shape.

The first Saturday Market was held in October 2014, followed by the Sunday Market in 2018. The Markets now operate every weekend, rain or shine.

Judy and Warrick deeply value the camaraderie the Markets foster — the friendships formed between stallholders, the financial opportunities created for small businesses, and the joy they bring to the wider community.

As the Market grew, it made sense for the couple to operate their own cafe and bakery stall. With the support of local staff and Warrick’s building and cabinetry expertise, the Market Cafe and Bakery were born. What began as a small weekend operation has since grown into the busy Cafe, Bakery, Butchery/Deli and Store.

Come and see The Old Packhouse for yourself. Enjoy a coffee, browse the markets, explore local produce and spend time in a place built for the community.
